Dog age calculator

How old is your dog really? Calculate your dog's age in human years in seconds — scientifically based and adjusted for size.

Half years are fine too (e.g. 0.5 for 6 months)

How old is a dog in human years?

The old rule of thumb that one dog year equals seven human years is outdated. Dogs age fastest in their first year and differently depending on size afterwards: small dogs age more slowly and live longer, large dogs age faster. This calculator uses the widely used model from the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association): the first year equals about 15 human years, the second brings your dog to around 24 — after that, roughly 4 to 6.5 human years are added per dog year, depending on size.

Your dog's life stages

  • Puppy (under 1 year): rapid development, physically and behaviorally.
  • Young dog (1–3 years): full of energy; socialization and training take center stage.
  • Adult (3–7 years): the most stable phase, physically at its peak.
  • Mature (7–10 years): first age-related changes; preventive care matters more.
  • Senior (10+ years): more rest; regular health checks pay off.

Frequently asked questions about dog age

Is the seven-human-years-per-dog-year rule true?

No, it's a rough oversimplification. Dogs age much faster in their first year and differently by size afterwards — simply multiplying by seven doesn't capture that.

Do large dogs age faster than small ones?

Yes. Large and very large breeds age faster per year and have a shorter life expectancy, while small dogs age more slowly and often live considerably longer.

When is a dog a senior?

As a rough guide, around 7 to 10 years — large breeds earlier, small ones later. From then on, regular preventive checkups are worthwhile.

How accurate is the calculator?

It gives a solid, science-based estimate (AVMA model plus an epigenetic formula). A dog's real age also depends on breed, genetics and health, and it doesn't replace a veterinary assessment.
